A fire broke out in a tenement house on Canton Road, Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong last night, causing 7 deaths and 11 injuries. Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor visited the scene at about 8:30 am today (16th) to learn about the progress of the investigation. The Fire Services Department has set up a dedicated team to investigate, and the Police West Kowloon Regional Crime Squad is also taking over the investigation of the cause of the fire.
Yau Ma Tei Divisional Commander (Acting Superintendent) Lin Yi Hang said that 30 people were evacuated after the police arrived, and 18 of them had to be sent to hospital. Among those sent to the hospital, 7 people aged between 9 and 40 died (4 men and 3 women), and the remaining 11 injured (6 men and 5 women), aged between 13 and 46 years old, were 7 of them. In critical condition (3 males and 4 females), 2 were severe, 1 was stable, and 1 was discharged from hospital.
