A fire broke out in a two-storey old house on Malacca Street in the historic district of George Town. An Indonesian man was burned to death on suspicion of being unable to open the iron-locked deep window.

When the firefighters arrived at the crime scene, there were two double-storey buildings with an area of about 1,200 square feet. A fire destroyed nearly 80% of the houses.

The director of the Northeast County Fire Bureau later confirmed that according to the authorities’ preliminary investigation, it is believed that the deceased was burned to death after being fainted by heavy smoke because he could not open the deep-locked iron windows.
He said that there were five Indonesian masseuses in the house at that time, two of whom were husband and wife. After the fire broke out, one couple immediately jumped out of the window to escape, and the other couple was rescued after firefighters arrived and saw the bar on the second floor.
The police then sent the charred body to the Penang hospital room for an autopsy. The Fire and Rescue Bureau is also investigating the cause of the fire.
