Although the Tehran government announced the expiration of the UN’s long-standing arms embargo against Iran, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said today that selling weapons to Iran still violates UN resolutions and will be subject to sanctions.
Pompeo’s statement stated: “If any individual or entity supplies, sells or transfers conventional weapons into or out of Iran, the United States is ready to impose sanctions by the competent domestic authorities.”
He said: “Committed to peace and stability in the Middle East, every country that supports the fight against terrorism should avoid any transfer of weapons to Iran.”
According to a 2015 agreement reached by the United Nations to confirm the world power and Iran, the arms embargo against Iran is scheduled to expire today.
Nowadays, Heilan can purchase weapons from Russia, China and other countries. Iran welcomes the end of the arms embargo and also considers a major diplomatic victory over the United States. The United States has previously sought to extend the arms embargo indefinitely, but was unsuccessful.
US President Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear agreement in 2018 and began to unilaterally restart sanctions on Iran.
Pompeo said that in the past 10 years, national congresses have complied with UN measures to avoid arms trafficking to Iran. Any country that challenges this ban now clearly wants to ignite conflict and tension in terms of peace and security.
