Agence France-Presse reported that the family of former French President Giscar Destin said that on December 2, local time, Valery Giscard d’Estaing died of Covid-19 at the age of 94.
According to reports, Destin died at his home in the Loire region “accompanied by his family” that day. In the past few months, he has been hospitalized many times for heart problems.
“His health has deteriorated and he died of infection with the new crown,” Valery Giscard d’Estaing’s family said in a statement, adding that his funeral will be held strictly according to his wishes.
According to reports, Valery Giscard d’Estaing made his last public appearance on September 30, 2019, when he attended the funeral of another former president, Jacques René Chirac.
Valery Giscard d’Estaing served as President of France from 1974 to 1981. He was committed to the construction of European integration and promoted the development of friendly relations between China and France.
During the presidency of Valery Giscard d’Estaing, France played an active role in advancing the European plan. In December 1974, he and the then German Chancellor Schmidt promoted the creation of the European Council (then the “European Economies Summit”) and also promoted the establishment of the European Monetary System (EMS) as the predecessor of the euro. Destin also approved direct elections for the European Parliament, paving the way for the first European elections in 1979.
Valery Giscard d’Estaing was also an advocate for another international organization: on November 15, 1975, he convened representatives of the United States, Japan, France, West Germany, and the United Kingdom at the Chateau de Rambouillet, west of Paris. This summit was later called the first meeting of the “Group of Five” (G5), and after the accession of Italy and Canada, the current “Group of Seven” (G7) was formed.
