Australia Urges Israel to Ensure Safety of Detained Nationals and Allow Contact with Families

《TodayAsiaNews Oct 3》 The Australian government has called on Israel to ensure the safety of several Australian citizens detained after a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza was intercepted in international waters earlier this week.

The Australians were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a group of about 40 vessels carrying medical and food supplies. Around 443 activists from various countries were detained by Israeli forces.

DFAT: Providing Consular Support

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) confirmed it is in contact with Israeli authorities and with the families of those detained. A spokesperson said:

“We are deeply concerned for the wellbeing of Australian nationals involved in the Sumud flotilla. We urge the Israeli government to act in accordance with international law and ensure their rights are respected.”

The Australian embassy in Tel Aviv has activated emergency procedures and is working to gain access to the detainees for consular assistance.

Public and Political Support Growing

Australian lawmakers have publicly expressed concern, with calls for the government to apply diplomatic pressure on Israel. Solidarity rallies have taken place in multiple Australian cities, with participants demanding the immediate release of all humanitarian volunteers.

The incident has reignited international debate over the legality and humanitarian impact of Israel’s blockade on Gaza.
