China Cyberspace Regulator Launches “Clear and Bright” Campaign to Crack Down on Online Negativity

《TodayAsiaNews Sep 26》 The China government is taking steps to address a growing wave of negative sentiment spreading across the country’s internet.

This week, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) launched a two-month special campaign targeting social media content that it says “excessively amplifies pessimistic and negative emotions.”

According to official statements, the campaign aims to curb “malicious incitement of negative sentiment” and foster a more “civilized, rational, and healthy online environment.”

Among the types of content being targeted are narratives such as “studying is useless,” “hard work is pointless,” and posts promoting “nihilistic and defeatist views on life.”

China is currently grappling with a slowing economy in the aftermath of a real estate crisis, high youth unemployment, and intense academic and job market competition — all of which have contributed to a growing sense of disillusionment among the younger generation.
