《SingaporeDaily》On September 20, former U.S. President Donald Trump publicly demanded on social media that Afghanistan return control of Bagram Air Base to the United States, warning of “serious consequences” if it fails to comply. The statement has sparked global attention.
Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social: “If Afghanistan doesn’t return Bagram Air Base to the people who built it—the United States of America—there will be serious consequences.”
According to Reuters, Trump had previously stated on September 18 that the U.S. is seeking to regain control of the strategic military base located north of Kabul. He told reporters that discussions were underway with Afghan authorities.
Bagram Air Base served as a key hub for U.S. military operations in Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001, attacks. Following the full withdrawal of U.S. forces in 2021, the base was taken over by the Taliban.
In response to Trump’s remarks, Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jalal stated on September 18 via X (formerly Twitter): “Afghanistan and the United States can engage in diplomatic talks… but the U.S. must not maintain a military presence in any part of Afghanistan.”
The White House has yet to issue an official response to Trump’s comments.
