Former Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui dies at the age of 98y

The Taipei Veterans General Hospital stated today that former President Lee Teng-hui, who had been hospitalized for nearly half a year, passed away at 7:24 p.m. at the age of 98.

Born in 1923, Lee Teng-hui became the first directly elected president in the history of the Republic of China in 1996. He is known as the pioneer of Taiwan’s democracy. Lee Tenghui is a Ph.D. from Cornell University in the United States. He was elected as the 7th Vice President of the Republic of China in 1984. After the death of former President Chiang Ching-kuo in January 1988, he became the 7th President. In March 1990, he was elected as the 8th President by the National Assembly. ; The first direct presidential election of the Republic of China was held in March 1996. Lee Teng-hui was elected the ninth president, and his term of office expired on May 19, 2000.

After measuring blood pressure and blood sugar by a nurse at home on the evening of February 8 this year, Lee Teng-hui choked and coughed while drinking milk to supplement his nutrition. He was rushed to Beirong where he was found to have lung infiltration and was hospitalized for nearly half a year.
